He would eventually leave the area and move to Peoria, Illinois before retiring to St. Charles, Missouri. He died on Aug. 28, 1818, in St. Charles. Apr 29, 2021 · On Thursday, Chicago moved a step closer to renaming the iconic Lake Shore Drive to honor Jean Baptiste Point DuSable, the Black man credited with founding the city nearly 250 years ago. DuSable, traditionally said to have been born in Haiti, was a trading post operator who, along with his Potawatomi wife Kitihawa, established the first recorded permanent settlement in the Chicago area in the late 1700s, which eventually grew into our current metropolis. He then graduated from Northwestern University School of Law in 1952. He was elected as Chicago’s 51st Mayor in 1983 & re-elected in 1987.
